— Hudson Bae

Meet Hudson Bae, our June 2024 Spotlight artist. At just 25, this energetic, enthusiastic, and eccentric drag king from Windsor has made a significant impact on the drag scene. Hudson, whose Instagram handle is @kinghudsonbae, brings a unique blend of historical costumes, video games, and classic Hollywood musicals to his performances.

A Canadian Icon in Drag

Hudson’s drag name reflects his initial vision of a Canadian-themed drag king, performing exclusively to songs by Canadian artists. The name Hudson Bae is quintessentially Canadian and delightfully punny, a perfect fit for his persona.

A Journey in Drag

Hudson's journey in drag started in Windsor, and he quickly became a beloved figure in the local drag scene. His dedication to showcasing queer historical aesthetics and representing queer history is evident in his performances and visual style. His aesthetic is a nod to historical queer figures, often incorporating nautical themes and gay historical references.

Favourite Things and Inspirations

Hudson’s favorite food is Bibimbap, and he enjoys historical costumes, video games, and classic Hollywood musicals. When it comes to drag, Hudson admires Jinkx Monsoon, Bendela Creme, Landon Cider, and Throb Zombie. His biggest inspirations are his drag family and fraternity, the Haus of Whimsee and Location Bros, who constantly motivate him to elevate his craft.

Drag Achievements and Memories

One of Hudson's proudest achievements is organizing Windsor's first all drag king show, providing many with their first exposure to drag kings. His best drag memories include participating in Epoxy’s history of drag show, and making an emotional connection with an audience member through a heartfelt performance.

Hudson’s Message

Through his drag, Hudson aims to demonstrate that masculinity is as performative as femininity. He challenges traditional notions of manliness, showing that it can encompass makeup, high heels, and skirts just as much as suits. His performances are a playful critique of the patriarchy, encouraging others to explore their own definitions of masculinity.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Hudson aspires to perform in Toronto and share the stage with some of his drag idols. Regardless of where his drag journey takes him, he plans to remain active in the community, bringing his unique perspective as a neurodiverse, AFAB, and genderqueer artist.

Upcoming Events

Hudson will be performing at the Battle of the Babes on June 8th in Windsor, and Pride at the Jazzbah on June 21st in Chatham. Keep an eye out for more of his upcoming shows!

BIO
Ahoy! Hudson Bae is a Windsor based drag king, and he’s here to rock the ship and your world.  With 5 years of performing under his belt, this campy Casanova is here to bring some quirky boy energy to the stage.  Hudson got his start performing with the University of Waterloo Drag Club, a performing troupe dedicated to promoting and uplifting trans and Nonbinary drag performers where he met the people that would not only encourage him to take his drag out of the closet, but would go on to become some of his closest drag friends to this day.  After the trials of covid and the horrors of digital drag, Hudson finally was able to start performing in his hometown of Windsor and it has just been a wild ride ever since.  He has had the honour of performing at pride events, charity fundraisers, and at shows across south-western Ontario alongside both his friends and some notable names!  He is forever thankful to be able to bring his own flavour of drag to those around him, and is always striving to improve and make those who support him proud.
