For February’s spotlight on THISisDRAG.com, we step into the whimsical, avant-garde world of Lua, a Windsor-based drag artist with a vision that transcends the ordinary. Known for her creative surrealism, wavy signature brows, and monochromatic looks, Lua’s drag serves as a bold commentary on individuality, connection, and the beauty of neurodivergence. From winning Ontario’s Drag Superstar to dreaming of runway modeling in drag, Lua is proof that artistry and authenticity can make waves.
Lua: Unveiling the Neurodivergent Superpower of Drag
The Origin of Lua
Lua’s journey into drag began with a car ride, a song, and a nudge from her husband. Listening to Jacob Collier’s "Lua," the idea for her drag name struck like lightning. “I loved the simplicity of it—a one-name wonder like Beyoncé or Oprah!” she recalls.
Hailing from Windsor, Lua is a self-described fierce, kooky, and beautiful artist with a penchant for blending humor and high fashion. Her aesthetic draws from surrealist and degenerate art, offering audiences a mix of strange yet compelling creativity.
Drag as Connection and Expression
What Lua loves most about drag is its ability to connect. “I love performing and connecting with people in ways I can’t in real life,” she shares. Through her unique humor and heartfelt performances, Lua creates a safe space for audiences to feel, laugh, and explore their emotions.
Lua’s art also serves a deeper purpose: championing neurodivergence. “It’s my superpower,” she says. From her quirky poses to her playful performances, she strives to inspire others to see the beauty in their unique minds.
Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent
When it comes to charisma, Lua’s silly, soft-spoken demeanor shines naturally. Her unique artistic vision blends surrealism with a relatable touch, setting her apart in the drag scene. Her nerve is rooted in fighting for the underdog and addressing systemic oppression in her art, tackling themes like Catholicism and addiction with both critique and strength. As for talent, Lua’s improvisation skills make her a standout performer who thrives in acting, singing, and comedic skits.
“Your inner light shines brightest when not compared to the light of others. So shine, Gina!!”
Biggest Achievements and Future Aspirations
In 2023, Lua’s talents were recognized when she won “Ontario’s Drag Superstar,” earning a $2,500 prize. But she’s far from done. Lua dreams of performing in cities with larger drag scenes, walking runways in drag, and even creating a fashion collective of wearable drag art.
What’s Next for Lua?
Lua’s immediate goal? Revitalizing her TikTok with more comedy and skits that show her authentic self. While her calendar might currently be open, she’s always ready to take on new creative challenges and bring her bold ideas to life.
From her wavy brows to her monochromatic looks, Lua is a queen who captivates and inspires. With an artistic vision rooted in individuality and connection, she’s not just performing—she’s breaking boundaries. Follow her journey on Instagram (@she.is.lua), and if you’re lucky enough to catch her live, prepare to enter a world where humor, emotion, and creativity reign supreme.
