In the Workroom with Noa
Fashion Article: Design a Look in 10 Steps
Intro
I’m Noa (@hcnoa), an 18-year-old drag artist from Leamington, ON. I began my drag journey 2 years ago, seeking self-expression in a world beyond my small-town confines. I recently began studying fashion design at Toronto Metropolitan University, igniting a world of creativity. I’m not just a drag artist; I’m a committed philanthropist. Last September I collaborated with Roblox on Royale High, raising $1.47 million USD. This year we raised $1.38 million USD for Childhood Cancer Research at St. Jude's Hospital, inspired by my own childhood cancer survival. I am currently immersed in my studies and living in Toronto, but there is nothing I enjoy more than designing a new look. Here’s my process in 10 easy steps.
Step 1: Inspiration
My inspiration usually stems from various sources. I often translate my emotions into the garment I'm creating. I put on music, grab my sketchbook, and sketch until I come up with something I like. I prefer to create new designs rather than look at others' work to stay unique.
Step 2: Palette
Experimenting with colour is my passion. I choose colours that match my mood and discover intriguing shades around town or in fabric shops. Green is my favourite color, and I enjoy pairing it with various other hues.
Step 3: Silhouettes
Shaping the body with silhouettes is my favourite. I play with classic waist and skirt silhouettes, baby doll dresses, and more. Silhouettes express the outfit's mood and are lots of fun to work with.
Step 4: Textures and Fabrics
Fabrics and textiles are exciting for me. Growing up in a small town, I had to be creative with stiffer, non-stretchy fabrics, which allowed me to experiment with shapes. Thrift shops are a treasure trove for upcycling materials.
Step 5: Accessories
Statement jewelry pieces and DIY accessories are my go-to. I create unique pieces from unconventional materials like broken chandeliers and old teacups. Layering on jewelry is a must, and I love pushing the boundaries of my style.
Step 6: Hairstyling
Hair has been a challenge for me, so I often get wigs from Zsa Zsa (@itsjustzsazsa), a performer in London, Ontario. Her wigs perfectly match my aesthetic, and I've had great experiences with her commissions.
Step 7: Makeup
My makeup journey leans towards a softer look. My hooded eyes and small forehead make extravagant drag makeup challenging. I'm open to experimenting with makeup, taking it slow to avoid mishaps.
Step 8: Footwear
I opt for high heels, as I'm not the tallest. I love tall stilettos or pleaser platform heels, as they enhance the overall silhouette of my look.
Step 9: Personalization
My personalization often includes flowers or fabric manipulation. I adore faux furs, over-the-top details, and unique additions like headpieces and hand beading.
Step 10: Reveal
I model the final look myself, as I couldn't afford a model. Becoming my own model was one of the reasons I started drag. I experiment with drawing backgrounds to give my designs a unique vibe.
